The New Castle stands on a hill south of the center of Banská Štiavnica in Slovakia, at 2,067 feet (630 meters), the highest point of the city center. The town council decided to fortify the town in 1541, after the Battle of Mohács in 1526. The New Castle was built between 1564 and 1571 as a watch tower during the Ottoman wars.
It is a Renaissance stone building with six floors and four bastions. It also served as the town's clock, and the exact time was announced on a trumpet every quarter hour.
It is a national cultural monument and is listed as intact. It is open to the public, and a permanent exhibition called Anti-Turkish Wars in Slovakia fills four floors. The top floor offers a panoramic view of the town.
