Novo Mesto Cathedral, or St Nicholas's Cathedral, stands on a hill above the Krka River. It was originally the Capitular Church of St Nicholas, first mentioned in 1428 though built earlier. The chapter was established in 1493, and reconstruction began then. A fire in 1576 led to a renovation financed by Provost Polidoro de Montagnana, who ordered a new high altar and acquired Tintoretto's The Vision of Saint Nicholas.
The style combines Gothic and Baroque. The chancel dates from the original church and is higher than the nave, which breaks the longitudinal axis. The nave was constructed in 1621, with Baroque arches and three Baroque chapels on each side. Reconstruction was completed in 1623.
The polygonal belfry on the west side dates from 1860. The Diocese of Novo Mesto was established on April 7, 2006.
