The Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, whom Berlin's Senator for Construction and Housing invited in March 1961, and it opened on September 15, 1968. The article names no client. David Chipperfield Architects renovated it, closing it in 2015 and reopening it in August 2021.
A black-painted steel roof plate, given as 1.8 meters (6 ft) thick, covers a glazed pavilion with eight cruciform columns and smooth granite floors. The roof cantilevers 59 feet (18 m), and the floor-to-ceiling height is 27.6 feet (8.4 m). The lower story, about three-quarters underground, covers about 10,000 square meters (108,000 sq ft).
The upper pavilion is reached only by three flights of steps, while the lower story holds the permanent collection, library, shop and café. The renovation cost €140 million, up from €101 million planned. Klaus Biesenbach has directed the museum since January 1, 2022.
