Its main component is shaped like a rhombicuboctahedron. The building is 73.6 meters (241.5 feet) high with 23 floors and weighs 115,000 tonnes without books. It seats about 2,000 readers and has a 500-seat conference hall.

A roof observation deck has binoculars around the perimeter and is reached by an elevator on the 23rd floor. A cafe and gallery sit on the 22nd floor. The collection holds about 10 million items.
