The National and University Library in Zagreb is Croatia's national library and the central library of the University of Zagreb. Velimir Neidhardt, Marijan Hržić, Zvonimir Krznarić and Davor Mance designed the cubical building, which is called the "Pantheon of the Croatian Book." The foundation stone was laid in 1988 and it opened on May 28, 1995.
It has a net floor area of 392,600 square feet (36,478 m²) and 1,100 seats. The collection holds about 3 million to 3.5 million items. The library traces its origins to a Jesuit library of 1607, and in 1913 it moved to an Art Nouveau building on Marko Marulić Square.
In 2020 it was the main venue for Croatia's EU Council Presidency, after 95 million kuna was spent on nine conference halls. The government also met there from March 19, 2020.
