The Art and Architecture Building at Prairie View A&M dates to 2005 and was designed by Michael Rotondi of RoTo Architects with HKS. It was one of three buildings funded under a 2000 agreement between Texas and the U.S. Department of Education to remove remnants of segregation at Prairie View and Texas Southern.
RoTo describes the building as a gateway to the campus and a landmark for the university's growth. It is conceived as a 100,000-square-foot (9,290-square-meter) loft space for formal and informal learning, tied together by a long three-story central volume. It carries meetings, presentations, classes and community life.
The building is the home of the College of Art and Architecture. It also holds a cultural center with research archives and a museum of African-American history, construction sciences spaces and a satellite business school. Inside are studios, a library, computer labs, classrooms and a presentation theater.
