The Museum aan de Stroom stands at Hanzestedenplaats in the Eilandje district of Antwerp, on the Scheldt. Neutelings Riedijk Architects designed it, and the city council decided in 1998 to build it. The first brick was laid on September 14, 2006, and it opened on May 17, 2011. The article calls the style postmodern Art Deco. It stands on the site of the former Hanzehuis, which burned in the 19th century.

The tower is 60 meters (200 feet) high, with an Indian red sandstone facade and curved glass panels. It is the largest museum in Antwerp and holds 470,000 objects, most in storage. A visible store gallery shows 180,000 items.

The collection covers maritime history, Antwerp history and cultures from Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Oceania.
