The Musée Soulages in Rodez, in the Aveyron region of France, is a museum of the painter Pierre Soulages. The Grand Rodez community ran the design competition. RCR Arquitectes, whose partners are Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta, designed it with Passelac & Roques Architects of Narbonne. It was completed in 2014.
The museum covers 6,600 square meters (about 71,000 square feet). It is a succession of rectangular volumes, or cubes, with gaps between them. They are clad in Corten weathering steel, which develops a rust-colored protective layer, and some are covered in glass. The steel tones echo Rodez and the work of Soulages.
The building stands on the north side of the renovated Foirail garden. Its south wall, facing the garden, is no higher than three meters (10 feet). The cubes give views of the gardens, the town and the Aveyron mountains, and the gaps frame views of the horizon.
