The Mossovet State Academic Theatre is at Bolshaya Sadovaya 16 in Moscow. Its name stands for "Moscow Soviet." It opened in 1923. The theater entrepreneur S. I. Prokofiev founded it as the Theatre of the Moscow Provincial Council of Trade Unions, and it was renamed the Theatre of Moscow City Council in 1938.
Yury Zavadsky led it from 1940 to 1977, a period of major progress that brought many Soviet stage stars to the company. It gained the status of an Academic Theatre in 1964.
From the mid-1970s, under Pavel Khomsky, it experimented in several spaces, including the Under the Roof stage of 120 seats, which opened in 1990. The Main stage, with 894 seats, mainly stages classical adaptations and works by contemporary directors.
