Moriyama House is a cluster of small houses in the Ota ward of Tokyo, built from 2002 to 2005. Ryue Nishizawa designed it for Yasuo Moriyama, who ran a liquor store when he commissioned it. Instead of one house, the site holds several separate volumes.
The volumes are made of thin steel sheets painted white. They are set at right angles to each other and to the site, and they do not touch. Each small house has its own garden, and earth-covered alleyways run between them. Openings are square or rectangular, and no window faces directly onto another unit.
Five of the units are complete mini-houses, each with a kitchenette and a bathroom. One unit serves as the shared living room and has a rooftop. Another has a basement audio room. The Museum of Modern Art holds a scale model of the house.
