Mor Gabriel Monastery is a Syriac Orthodox complex near Midyat in the Tur Abdin region. The founders, Mor Samuel and Mor Simon, began the main church in 397 as a modest prayer house, and Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I financed its completion in 512. The article names no architect or style. It describes the complex as built partly from stones of a pre-Christian temple, with its eastern wall preserved from a Zoroastrian sanctuary.

The Dome of Theodora, built in the early sixth century, rises 56 feet (17 m) and is made of radially layered brick and ashlar. The Church of the Virgin Mary dates to the fifth century.

The monastery suffered fire from Persian forces in 580, pillaging in 1100 and a fire set in 1394. It was rebuilt in 1502 and renovated from 1962 to 1971. In 2013, the government agreed to return 240,000 square meters of land, but about 270,000 remain confiscated.
