The Monterey Building began as a commercial building owned by the City of San Antonio. The University of Texas at San Antonio bought it in the late 1990s, and it now houses the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning on the UTSA Downtown Campus. Architecture majors have called it a second home.
UTSA first offered an architecture degree in 1979. Architecture became its own academic unit in 2002, and the college took its current name in 2016. It now offers six degree programs in architecture, interior design, historic preservation, planning and construction.
In spring 2016, interior design students proposed redesigns of the building as a semester project. They imagined a lobby with an atrium, a gallery for student work, a lounge and a coffee bar. The proposals were student exercises. The building's Monterey Building Gallery has hosted exhibits of student and faculty work.
