The monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla in La Rioja consist of Suso, above, and Yuso, a refoundation on a lower site. Suso is believed to date to the 6th century and to stand on a hermitage where Saint Emilian lived. Yuso dates to the 11th century. The article names no architect, founder or overall style.
Suso has Mozarabic arches, and Yuso has a processional cloister and monastic kitchen gardens. The scriptorium produced the second phase of the San Millán Beatus, though the article does not say which building it occupied. The property covers 47 acres (19.01 hectares), with a buffer zone of 658 acres (266.24 hectares).
The Black Prince sacked the monasteries. After the 19th-century expropriation of monastic property, Suso was left uninhabited, and Yuso was abandoned and then reoccupied by an Augustinian community. Part of Yuso is now a hotel. The village lies somewhat off the Way of St James but still draws pilgrims.
