The Minute Man is a bronze statue beside the Concord River in Minute Man National Historical Park, Concord, Massachusetts. Daniel Chester French was the sculptor. It was dedicated on April 19, 1875, the centennial of the Battle of Concord.
The statue is 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and shows a farmer stepping away from his plow with a musket in hand. His overcoat is draped over the plow. French cast the bronze from the metal of Civil War cannons. The figure may be a portrait of Isaac Davis, an officer who died in the battle.
The granite pedestal stands 7.5 feet (2.3 meters) tall and 4.5 feet (1.4 meters) wide. Its design by James Elliot Cabot won a town competition. The monument committee included Ralph Waldo Emerson. The powder horn sits on the figure's back instead of at his hip, a known error.
