The Millennium Dome on the Greenwich Peninsula in London was designed by Richard Rogers, with Buro Happold as engineer and a McAlpine and Laing joint venture as contractor. The Millennium Commission and a National Lottery grant funded it, and the New Millennium Experience Company ran the exhibition. Construction began in June 1997, and the structure was completed on June 22, 1999. A private opening took place on December 31, 1999, and the public exhibition ran through 2000. The project cost 789 million pounds, per the National Audit Office. The article does not name a style.
The roof is a cable net on twelve masts, each 330 feet (100 m) high, covered in PTFE-coated glass fiber. It is 1,200 feet (365 m) across and 170 feet (52 m) high at the center. Inside were fourteen themed zones and the Millennium Star diamonds.
About 6.5 million visited in 2000, against a forecast of 12 million.
