Mehrangarh in Jodhpur was founded by Rao Jodha, chief of the Rathore clan, with the foundation laid on May 12, 1459, per the text. The infobox gives only 1459, but the text says most of the existing fort dates to the 17th century, especially the reign of Maharaja Jaswant Singh (1638 to 1678). The article names no architect or style.
It is red sandstone and stands about 400 feet (122 m) above the plains. Walls reach up to 118 feet (36 m) high and 69 feet (21 m) wide. The lead gives 1,200 acres (486 ha), while the text says the fort spreads over 3.1 miles (5 km). Seven gates include Jai Pol and Dedh Kangra Pol, with cannonball scars. Palaces include Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal and Sheesha Mahal.
The Mehrangarh Museum Trust controls it, and it houses a museum, restaurants and craft bazaars. A 2008 stampede at the Chamunda Devi temple killed 224 people.
