Matsumoto Castle in Nagano Prefecture is a flatland castle. The text credits Ishikawa Kazumasa and his son Yasunaga with building the tower, while the infobox lists Shimadachi Sadanaga, who built the original fortification between 1504 and 1520. The towers were begun in 1590, and much of the castle was believed complete by 1593 to 1594.
The keep complex has five original structures, the tenshu, Inui-ko-tenshu, Watari-yagura, Tatsumi-tsuke-yagura and Tsukimi-yagura. It is one of twelve surviving tenshu in Japan, and four other buildings are National Treasures. The infobox gives earth, stone and wood. The article gives no dimensions.
In 1872 the Meiji government ordered most structures demolished. A Great Meiji renovation from 1903 to 1913 repaired the leaning tenshu, and the five National Treasure buildings were dismantled and rebuilt in 1950 to 1955. A 2011 earthquake caused about ten cracks in the main tower's inner wall.
