The Marktkirche is the main Protestant church of Wiesbaden, on the city's Schlossplatz. The medieval church of St. Mauritius burned on June 27, 1850, and the architect Carl Boos was appointed in 1851 to design its replacement. The foundation stone was laid on September 22, 1853, and the church was consecrated in 1862.

It is a Neo-Gothic brick building with five towers. At completion it was the largest brick building in the Duchy of Nassau. The main tower rises about 300 feet (98 meters), making the church the tallest building in Wiesbaden. Inside, a vaulted ceiling is painted as a starry sky.

The tower holds a carillon of 49 bronze bells, the largest in Hesse, inaugurated on October 31, 1986. The Walcker organ was built in 1863 and expanded in 1982 to 85 registers. Martin Niemoeller gave his last sermon here in 1937 before his arrest.
