Manchester Oxford Road station stands in the city center at the junction of Whitworth Street West and Oxford Street. It opened on 20 July 1849 on the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway. The viaduct carrying it was built in 1839 and is Grade II listed.

The station was rebuilt on 12 September 1960 to a design by W. R. Headley and Max Clendinning, with the structural engineer Hugh Tottenham. The structure is timber, with three overlapping conoid roofs chosen to reduce the load on the weak viaduct, and the interior is free of columns. The rebuilt station was listed Grade II in 1995.

It has five platforms, four of them through platforms and one a terminating bay. It served 6.39 million passengers in 2024 and 2025, and it serves the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University area.
