Maguelone Cathedral, dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, stands on an isthmus between the Étang de l'Arnel and the Mediterranean Sea, about nine kilometers south of Montpellier. It is a fortified Romanesque and Gothic building, consecrated in 1054. The bishops of Maguelone led the building work. Bishop Arnaud began rebuilding it around 1030, Galtier built the chevet and fortified transept, and Jean de Montlaur built the Romanesque nave from 1161 to 1190.
Pope Alexander III dedicated the high altar in 1163. Cardinal Richelieu ordered it partly demolished in 1632. Frédéric Fabrège bought the site in 1852 and began its restoration, and Christian worship returned in 1875.
Seventeen stained-glass windows by Robert Morris were installed in 2002. An annual early music festival is held here each June.
