M+ is a museum of visual culture at 38 Museum Drive in the West Kowloon Cultural District of Hong Kong. Herzog & de Meuron and Farrells won the competition that the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority announced in June 2013. Construction began in 2014 and finished in December 2020. The occupation permit came on December 24, 2020, and the museum opened on November 12, 2021.
The building covers about 700,000 square feet (65,000 square meters), with roughly 185,000 square feet (17,200 square meters) for exhibitions. It cost 5.9 billion Hong Kong dollars. The form is an upside-down T. A raised horizontal slab holds the exhibition spaces and lets pedestrians pass underneath.
A tower above the slab houses restaurants, lounges, gardens, offices and research facilities. An LED lighting system in the facade works as a large screen that people can see across Victoria Harbour.
