Wallace Harrison designed the master plan for Lincoln Center, built under the Lincoln Square Renewal Project during Robert Moses's urban renewal program. Acquiring the site displaced more than 7,000 residents and 800 businesses. John D. Rockefeller III led the effort and raised more than half of the $184.5 million in private funds.

The halls came from different architects: Max Abramovitz's Philharmonic Hall (1962), Philip Johnson's New York State Theater (1964), Eero Saarinen's Vivian Beaumont Theater (1965), Harrison's Metropolitan Opera House (1966, 3,900 seats) and Pietro Belluschi's Juilliard School (1969). The campus covers 16.3 acres (6.6 hectares).

The infobox gives 1955 to 1969, but the text puts groundbreaking at May 14, 1959. The infobox says the first opening was 1962, while the text says Fordham Law School opened first, in 1961. The article describes no style or materials.
