Leipzig Hauptbahnhof was designed by William Lossow and Max Hans Kühne, who won a 1906 competition with 76 entries. The Royal Saxon and Prussian state railways were the clients. The foundation stone was laid on November 16, 1909, platforms opened gradually from 1912 and the station opened on December 4, 1915. The article counts 26 platforms in 1915, while the lead says 21 and the infobox 23.

The article names no style. It has two domed entrance halls, six iron train sheds and a 978-foot (298 m) facade. The floor area is 898,400 square feet (83,460 square meters), described as Europe's largest railway station by floor area.

A US raid on July 7, 1944 collapsed the concourse roof. Restoration ended in 1965, and a shopping mall opened in 1997. The City Tunnel opened in 2013. The article gives no hours.
