Lee III Hall is the 2012 addition to Lee Hall at Clemson University. Thomas Phifer, a Clemson architecture graduate, designed it with McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture and Partners of New York City. It cost $31.6 million and has an estimated 55,000 square feet (5,100 square meters), which raised the size of the Lee complex by about 50 percent.
The original Lee Hall was built in 1957 and 1958 as the Structural Science Building. The article describes Lee III as a zero-energy building. It uses rooftop photovoltaic panels, 42 geothermal wells about 440 feet (134 meters) deep, and natural ventilation.
A 30,000-square-foot (2,800-square-meter) garden roof is described as the largest university garden roof in the southeastern United States. The building houses the School of Architecture, Planning, Development, Preservation and Landscape Architecture, the Department of Art and the Department of Construction Science and Management.
