Läckö Castle stands on Kållandsö island in Lake Vänern, about 15.5 miles (25 km) north of Lidköping. Brynolf Algotsson, Bishop of Skara, laid the foundations in 1298 for a fort of two or three houses surrounded by a wall. Bishop Brynolf Gerlachsson enlarged it after a fire in the 1470s. King Gustav Vasa took possession in 1527, after the Reformation.
In 1615, Field Marshal Jacob Pontusson De la Gardie received it and added the keep's third floor, the main courtyard portal and frescoes. Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie began major works in 1654, including a fourth floor in the main building and decoration by hired artists. Ownership later passed to Count Carl Gustaf Tessin and then to General Carl Johan Adlercreutz.
The article describes a medieval origin maintained and furnished in Baroque style and names no architects. The National Property Board has managed it since 1993, and an opera is staged in the courtyard each summer.
