La Cité du Vin is a wine museum at 134 Quai de Bacalan in Bordeaux, on the Garonne River. XTU Architects designed it, with Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières as architects in charge. The City of Bordeaux was the client, and the Fondation de La Cité du Vin owns it. It opened in 2016 on a site of 13,644 square meters (about 147,000 square feet).
The building is curved and fluid. Its skin combines silk-screen printed glass panels with perforated, iridescent, lacquered aluminum panels in a golden tone. The architects describe the design as seamless roundness, intangible and sensual. The facade reflects the changing light and the river.
Inside, the ground floor is dark like a cellar and grows brighter toward the upper levels. A central staircase organizes the flow, and a viewing tower gives panoramic views. The permanent exhibition sits under a wooden vaulted structure. One entrance faces the city and one faces the river.
