The Kuwait National Assembly Building stands on Arabian Coast Street on the Kuwait City waterfront. Jørn Utzon designed it, and his son Jan Utzon directed its completion, with Max Walt as structural engineer. Work began in July 1978 and finished in 1982. The article describes an Islamic-inspired design with a bazaar-like central hall.
The complex measures 18,000 square meters. It uses 12,800 precast elements of white cement concrete in 150 basic types, and steel cables post-tension the roof of the public square. The windowless assembly chamber is 82 by 34 meters.
Retreating Iraqi troops set the building on fire in February 1991. It was restored at a cost of about 70 million dollars.
