KunstHausWien in Vienna occupies a building from 1892 that Friedensreich Hundertwasser planned to renovate himself. The article does not name the original architect. The renovation ran from 1989 to 1991 and was sponsored by BAWAG P.S.K., and the museum opened in April 1991. It is privately operated and receives no government aid.
The article describes a Hundertwasser style, with undulating floors, few straight lines, bright colors and abundant foliage. It uses traditional masonry with enamelled checkerboard mosaics on the facade and a glass frontage in front. Exhibition space is 43,000 square feet (4,000 m²).
In 2003, the co-author Josef Krawina sued the museum board over joint authorship. The Supreme Civil Court issued an injunction in his favour, and both parties were advised to settle. The final outcome is not stated. Attendance was 174,000 in 2009.
