The Kunsthaus Zürich is Switzerland's biggest art museum by area. Karl Moser and Robert Curjel designed the original building, which opened in 1910 and grew in 1925, 1958 and 1976. David Chipperfield designed the extension, a large rectangular block covered in sandstone. The article names no overall style.
The extension has about 13,000 square meters (140,000 sq ft) of usable space, a gain of more than 80%. It has two upper floors of galleries, and a basement link runs under the street to the old museum. It cost $230 million, split between the city and canton of Zurich and private donors. It opened on October 9, 2021.
The Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft runs the museum. The collection runs from medieval to contemporary art and includes Monet, Munch, Picasso and Giacometti. Collection admission is free on Wednesdays.
