Klosterneuburg Abbey was founded in 1113 by Saint Leopold III, Margrave of Babenberg, for secular canons. The cornerstone of the abbey church was laid on June 12, 1114, and it was consecrated on September 29, 1136. Giovanni Battista Carlone guided the Baroque remodel of the church from 1634 to 1645. Donato Felice d'Allio began the monastery in 1730, and only the east and north wings, about one eighth of the plan, were finished. Joseph Kornhäusel completed the other wings in neoclassical style by 1842, with only two of nine planned domes built.
Friedrich von Schmidt restored the church in 1879 and added neo-Gothic twin steeples. The Verduner Altar of 1181 by Nicholas of Verdun uses gilded copper plates, counted at 45 in one section and 51 in another.
It remains an active monastery and a minor basilica, with a museum, a gallery and a winery.
