The Karl Marx Monument in Chemnitz, Germany, is a stylized bronze head of Karl Marx. The Soviet sculptor Lev Kerbel made it. Work began on May 10, 1953, and it was inaugurated on October 9, 1971, before a crowd of about 250,000. It first stood along Karl-Marx-Allee, today's Brückenstraße.
The head is 23 feet (7.1 meters) tall. With its base platform the monument stands over 43 feet (13 meters) and weighs about 40 tonnes. The bronze was cast in Leningrad in 95 pieces. VEB Germania welded it together in Karl-Marx-Stadt, because Soviet technology was unsuitable. Two pedestals are made of Korninskij granite.
Behind it a wall carries the line Workers of the world, unite, in German, English, French and Russian. The monument stands in the inner city.
