Kamakhya Temple stands on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati and is one of the Shakti pithas. Its structure is dated to the 8th to 9th century, and it was rebuilt many times. The article now favors Hussein Shah's invasion of 1498 as the cause of its destruction. The Koch reconstruction was completed in 1565, with Chilarai supervising and the builder Meghamukdam choosing brick for the dome. Ahom kings made later additions.

The lower part is stone, and a beehive-like brick shikhara rises over a cruciform base. The sanctum lies below ground, down steep steps, where a yoni-shaped rock depression is fed by a spring. Ten Mahavidya shrines stand in the complex.

The Ambubachi Mela and Durga Puja draw thousands. In July 2015 the Supreme Court transferred its administration to the Bordeuri Samaj.
