The Kahal Shalom Synagogue stands at 8 Simiou Street in La Juderia, the Jewish Quarter of the city of Rhodes. It was completed in 1577 and is the oldest synagogue in Greece. It follows the Eastern Sephardi rite, and its design is typical of Sephardic and Ottoman synagogues.
Inside are a central bimah, a floor mosaic of local black and white stones, and two Torah arks on either side of the door to the inner courtyard. Plaques are written in Ladino, Hebrew and French.
It survived the bombing of World War II, the only one of the four synagogues of La Juderia to do so. Its use largely ended after the German occupation in 1943, when more than 1,550 of about 1,700 Jews of Rhodes were deported and murdered. It now houses the Jewish Museum of Rhodes and has an Orthodox congregation that is active in summer.
