The Japan National Stadium in Shinjuku, Tokyo, was designed by Kengo Kuma. He was selected in December 2015 after an earlier design by Zaha Hadid was scrapped. The Japan Sport Council owns it. Groundbreaking was on December 11, 2016, it was completed on November 30, 2019, and it opened on December 21, 2019. The cost was about 157 billion yen. The article calls it a multipurpose stadium and names no style.

Timber is a major structural part, drawn from all 47 prefectures as certified wood. The eaves were inspired by Hōryū-ji, with air spaces for natural ventilation. Some of the roof has transparent solar panels, and rainwater is collected for irrigation. Capacity is 67,750.

It hosted the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies and athletics, without spectators, and the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
