Inveraray Castle was designed by William Adam and Roger Morris, with Robert Mylne creating later neoclassical rooms. Archibald Campbell, Earl of Ilay and later 3rd Duke of Argyll, began improving the estate in 1743. The foundation stone was laid in October 1746 on the site of a 15th-century castle. The infobox gives no construction dates.

The article calls it one of the earliest Gothic Revival buildings. The infobox lists stone, and the text specifies ashlar lapis ollaris. The roofs were later altered with a third floor and conical roofs on the four round towers. In the 1770s the village was demolished and rebuilt nearby.

A fire struck in 1975. The 13th Duke's family lives in private apartments, and the castle is open to visitors with a collection of more than 1,300 weapons. The article gives no hours.
