Innsbruck Cathedral replaced a Romanesque church first referenced in 1180. Johann Jakob Herkomer was selected as architect in December 1716 and died on October 27, 1717, and his nephew Johann Georg Fischer continued his plans with few changes. Innsbruck citizens pushed for the new church, and Prince Bishop Kaspar Ignaz Künigl dedicated it. The infobox and text give the style as Baroque.
The foundation stone was laid on May 12, 1717, and the dome and towers were completed on November 16, 1720. The dedication was on September 9, 1724, and the interior was finished in 1732, though the infobox gives completion as 1724. Cosmas Damian Asam painted the ceiling frescoes, and Egid Quirin Asam did the stucco. The facade uses Hötting breccia and Hagau marble.
Bombing damaged it on December 16, 1944, and it was restored from 1946 to 1950. It became a cathedral in 1964.
