The Church of São Domingos stands on Largo de São Domingos in Lisbon and is classified as a National Monument. It was dedicated in 1241 and was at one time the largest church in Lisbon. Before 1910 it typically hosted Portuguese royal weddings. It was formerly associated with the Inquisition.
In 1506 the church and its square were the site of the Lisbon massacre, in which a mob killed thousands of New Christians. The Jesuit missionary Gabriel Malagrida was executed at the church in 1761 after being accused of treason.
The 1531 earthquake damaged it, and the 1755 earthquake almost completely destroyed it. Rebuilding was completed in 1807. A fire gutted the church in 1959, and two firefighters died. It reopened in 1994, and the restoration left visible traces of the fire.
