The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston stands at 25 Harbor Shore Drive on the Fan Pier. Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed the building after winning a 1999 competition, and it opened in December 2006. The museum was founded in 1936 as the Boston Museum of Modern Art, renamed the Institute of Modern Art in 1939, and became the Institute of Contemporary Art in 1948. The article names no style for the current building.
The building covers 65,000 square feet. It holds galleries, a performance space and an exterior grand staircase, and the West Gallery is its largest exhibition space. The permanent collection began in 2006. The ICA Watershed, a renovated 15,000-square-foot building, opened in 2018 and is free.
The building won the 2007 Harleston Parker Medal. The critic Philip Nobel called it a "botched box." The article gives no hours or admission for the main museum.
