Hong Kong International Airport sits on Chek Lap Kok island off Lantau Island. Foster and Partners designed Terminal 1. A consortium led by Mott Connell, the Hong Kong office of Mott MacDonald, handled detailed design. Ove Arup designed the roof structure. Construction began in 1991. The official opening came on July 2, 1998, and passengers began using it on July 6.
Terminal 1 covers about 570,000 square meters (6.1 million square feet), among the largest passenger terminal buildings in the world. The airport site covers 12.48 square kilometers. Workers flattened two islands and reclaimed 9.38 square kilometers of seabed. Three parallel asphalt runways are 12,467 feet (3,800 meters) long.
The glass sides of the terminal were designed to break in high winds to relieve pressure and help it withstand typhoons. A sky bridge to the T1 Satellite Concourse opened on November 1, 2022. It is 656 feet (200 meters) long.
