The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum is at 500 West U.S. Highway 24 in Independence, Missouri. It sits on a hill overlooking the Kansas City skyline, on land donated by the city. Edward F. Neild was the lead architect, but he died in July 1955 while the design was in progress, and Alonzo H. Gentry completed the work.
It was dedicated on July 6, 1957. It was built with private funds and was the first presidential library created under the 1955 Presidential Libraries Act. Gould Evans later led a $23 million renovation, unveiled in 2001.
Two floors of exhibits cover Truman's life and presidency, and the library includes a full-size replica of the Oval Office. Thomas Hart Benton's mural Independence and the Opening of the West decorates the lobby. Truman is buried in the library courtyard.
