The Haifa Museum of Art was established in 1951 in Haifa, originally for a large Marc Chagall exhibition. It is located at 26 Shabbetai Levi Street in Wadi Nisnas, downtown Haifa. The stone building was constructed in the late 1920s and opened in the early 1930s as an Anglican girls' school. After Israel's founding it served as an immigrant center, and in the early 1950s it housed a workers' high school.
The museum moved into the building in 1977 and opened to the public as a municipal museum in 1978, following renovations.
The museum ranks as Israel's third-largest art museum and focuses on Israeli and international contemporary art. Its roughly 7,000 items are mostly contemporary Israeli works. The permanent collection includes works by Joseph Zaritsky, Mordechai Ardon, Marc Chagall, Honoré Daumier and Odilon Redon.
