The Guangzhou Library stands in Zhujiang New Town, on the banks of the Pearl River. Nikken Sekkei designed it after an invitational competition in 2004 and 2005. The Guangzhou Municipal Government established the library. The foundation was laid on February 20, 2006. Part of the building opened on December 28, 2012, and it opened fully on June 23, 2013.

The design concept is Beautiful Books. A cascading, book-like exterior is meant to show the overlap of history and culture. Two towers resemble the Chinese character 之 when seen from east to west. The article says it incorporates arcade concepts and Lingnan art.

The gross area is 100,000 square meters (1.08 million sq ft), with 4,000 seats and 8.43 million items. The article names no materials and gives no hours.
