Grey's Monument stands at the junction of Grey, Grainger and Blackett Streets in central Newcastle upon Tyne. It honors Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey, who was prime minister from 1830 to 1834. Public subscription paid for it. The column was completed on August 11, 1838, and the statue was placed on August 24.
The monument is 133 feet (41 meters) tall. A fluted Roman Doric column carries a Portland stone statue by Edward Hodges Baily, 13 feet (4 meters) high. Joseph Welch built it. The sources name the architect as Benjamin Green, though the infobox credits John Green. A helical staircase of 164 steps rises inside.
Lightning knocked off the statue's head in 1941, and Roger Hedley made a new one in 1947. The viewing platform is occasionally open. The monument is Grade I listed, and Monument Metro station lies directly beneath it.
