The Gray Design Building is the home of the University of Kentucky College of Design at 349 Scott Street in Lexington. It was built in 1917 as a tobacco warehouse, known as the Reynolds Building, and reopened in 2024 after reuse. Studio Gang was the design architect, and K. Norman Berry Associates was the architect of record.
The college's page gives 100,000 square feet (9,290 square meters); Studio Gang's says 132,000. Exposed brick walls, wooden beams and large windows survive from the warehouse. A two-story space called the Clearing admits daylight through a clerestory, and the Maker's Suite holds more than 8,000 square feet (743 square meters) of fabrication tools.
Studio Gang added a steel stair, a fabrication dock, a plaza and a canopy, and a geothermal well system cuts its use of the energy grid. Gray, Inc. gave more than $5.2 million. AIA Kentucky gave it an Architecture Honor Award in 2024.
