The Grande Chartreuse is the head monastery of the Carthusian order, in the Chartreuse Mountains north of Grenoble. In 1084, Saint Hugh gave the site to the hermit Saint Bruno and his followers, who founded the order. The current building was erected in 1688. The article names no architect, style, dimensions or materials.

It says the monastery went through many severe casualties, reconstructions and renovations. The monks were expelled in 1790 during the French Revolution and returned in 1838. It was sold in 1927 after expulsions under the 1901 Association Law, reopened in 1940, and served as a hospital for the Allied forces at the end of World War II. Its sources conflict on the dates of the expulsions.

Visitors are not permitted at the monastery, and motor vehicles are barred from the surrounding roads. A museum about 1.2 miles (2 km) away covers the Carthusian order.
