The Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg stands on the northeastern corner of the Rond-Point Schumann in Luxembourg City, near the Glacis and the Red Bridge. It was formerly the Théâtre Municipal, and it replaced the Théâtre des Capucins, the city's main theater from 1869. The Parisian architect Alain Bourbonnais won the 1958 competition. Groundbreaking took place in autumn 1959, and the theater opened on 15 April 1964.

The main theater has 943 seats, and the studio holds up to 400. An underground car park has 450 spaces. Over time the staging demands of touring companies were hard to meet, safety requirements needed upgrading, and asbestos had to be removed.

The Berlin firm Gerling and Arendt renovated it from 2002 to 2003, keeping the original architecture intact. It hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 1973 and 1984.
