The Goetheanum in Dornach was designed by Rudolf Steiner for the Anthroposophical Society, and Edith Maryon co-created the sculpture The Representative of Humanity. The first building was begun in 1913 to house the society's annual summer theater events. The text says it opened in 1920, while the lead says it was in use from 1919 to 1922. Fire destroyed it at the turn of 1922 and 1923, and arson is claimed but unproven. The second building was designed in 1923, begun in 1924 and completed in 1928, after Steiner's death.
The article calls the style Expressionist and organic. The first building was timber over a curving concrete base, and the second is cast concrete. The two halls seat 1,500 in total, and the present auditorium seats 1,000.
The auditorium was remodeled in the mid-1950s and late 1990s. It is the world center of the anthroposophical movement and is open seven days a week, with tours several times daily.
