Ginza Place is an 11-story commercial building at the Ginza 4-chome crossing in Tokyo. Klein Dytham architecture won the design competition in 2013 and designed its facade and massing,. The client and landowner was Sapporo Real Estate. It opened in 2016.
The facade has 5,315 aluminum panels in pearlescent white. Each is about 3 feet (0.9 meter) wide and 2 inches (5 centimeters) deep, and from 1 to 16 feet (0.3 to 4.9 meters) high. The pattern is inspired by sukashibori, a traditional Japanese open latticework. Panels attach to rails so they can slide during an earthquake.
Three bands of small, medium and large panels echo a 1932 department store across the street. Color-changing LEDs backlight the perforations, from cool blue in summer to warm candlelight in winter. Glass walls on the lower floors show Sony and Nissan showrooms, and balconies on the third and seventh floors hold a cafe and a restaurant.
