The German Historical Museum stands on Unter den Linden in Berlin, in the Zeughaus, or armory, dated 1695. Andreas Schlüter made the masks in its courtyard, which has a restored glass roof. The museum was founded on October 28, 1987, and held its first exhibitions in the Zeughaus in September 1991.

The Zeughaus was restored, with a closure from 1998 to 2003. In parallel, I. M. Pei designed a separate Exhibition Hall of 29,000 square feet (2,700 m²) on four floors, which opened in 2003. The Zeughauskino cinema seats 164.

The Zeughaus closed on June 28, 2021, for renovation and a new permanent exhibition. It is not expected to reopen before 2031. The Exhibition Hall stays open with temporary exhibitions.
