The Gate Theatre is on Cavendish Row in Dublin, Ireland. The building was constructed as part of the New Assembly Rooms between 1784 and 1786, about a decade after the original assembly rooms and rotunda, now the Ambassador Theatre. In 1930 the company moved into the 18th-century Rotunda Annex, known as the Upper Concert Hall, which is the Gate's present home.

Hilton Edwards and Micheál MacLiammóir founded the theatre in 1928, with Daisy Bannard Cogley and Gearóid Ó Lochlainn. Its first season included seven plays, among them Peer Gynt and Salomé. The company opened in the Rotunda Annex with Goethe's Faust on February 17, 1930.

Ronnie Tallon and Scott Tallon Walker Architects guided a later restoration and added a new wing containing the Gate Studio.
